The Light Assignment

For assignment 2 des100, we had to design and prototype a lamp for a friend and family. Since my family doesn’t use any lamps, I decided to have my target user by my close friend, Sophie who I've known for 3 years.

Based on the interview, her main design statement and requirements: have to be minimal, slim with a sturdy base and be able to control the light intensity. The reason for those requirements was because of functional purposes.

  • The slim aspect was so the lamp doesn't take up too much space because her current lamp is big and bulky and takes up too much space.

  • The sturdy base was so that the lamp doesn’t fall when she accidentally hits the lamp.

  • The light intensity was so that she had control and had her ideal light intensity. She has an optimum intensity so she doesn't like when the light is too bright like the main light nor too dark that she can only see her computer light.

  • The minimal aspect was so that the interior design is consistent. The lamp she currently has is too big and stands out.

Design Statement

Visualisation

I did quick ideation and then chose the top 5 concepts and developed further in a functional way. To which, I made her choose her favourite design and I did both a detailed sketch by hand and a 3D model. Based on visualisation, she had nothing but positive feedback as she likes the shape and the use of wood as it matches her interior. So I only did minor changes and kept the design the same.

Specification

Since my target user was satisfied with the shape, my next problem was the actual light. To which I played the light simulation through Tinkercad with the Dimmer Arduino. Successfully managed to solve the controlling light aspect which my client was pleased to hear.

Overall design meets a lot of the specifications that meet up her requirements. Her lamp is specifically unique and valuable as is customised so it matches her room and is more catered to her. Although she is satisfied with the final design, I would have personally like to make the lamp a bit longer in size and I can see it has multiple functions with multiple colours. I could explore my design further but otherwise, my client and I am satisfied with the final product.
